Acupuncture Schools

Author: Michael Bustamante

Acupuncture Schools teach various techniques and practices of this ancient Chinese healing method to prepare students for professions in the healing arts. Acupuncture has been used successfully to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions, such as arthritis, headaches, smoking cessation, weight loss, stress, and many others.

Acupuncture Schools inform us that the practice of Acupuncture is founded on the belief that the body will respond positively to a series of fine needles placed in key locations for a short period of time. Future acupuncturists are trained to gently tap the needles into place, penetrating only the uppermost layers of the skin. Although it sounds painful, most patients feel little, if any, discomfort.

Some acupuncture schools, teach future practitioners the five-element Oriental Medicine approach to acupuncture, which is often used in conjunction with traditional Western medical practices.

There are several different styles of acupuncture education that may be offered by various Acupuncture Schools from around the country and the world. In addition to advanced acupuncture needling techniques, Acupuncture schools offer courses that often include other aspects of traditional medicine, such as anatomy, body therapy, massage therapy, and biosciences. Depending on the school of choice, students may be required to study herbal medicine or be offered herbal courses as an elective.

To become a professional Acupuncturist can involve years of study from one of more than fifty accredited Acupuncture Schools. Graduates of Acupuncture Schools will obtain a college degree in Acupuncture, however, most states also require the practitioner to obtain a professional license in order to practice. Apprenticeships begin with licensed acupuncturists in a clinical setting. Typically, during the third year of acupuncture schools, students begin practicing as interns on their own patients.
