Medical Transcriptionist

Author: Damian Sofsian

Medical transcriptionists are those people who listen to recordings made by health care professionals and write them into medical reports and other materials. They normally use a headset to listen to the recordings, and a foot pedal for pausing when required. Medical transcriptionists transcribe the recordings on a word processor or a personal computer, while checking for grammatical errors and clarity. The transcriptionists return the transcribed material to the healthcare professional who dictated to them, for approval or correction. These transcribed documents eventually become part of patients permanent files.

To comprehended and precisely transcribe reports into a clear and understandable format, medical transcriptionists must have a good knowledge of medical terminology, physiology and anatomy, pharmacology and so on. Also, they must possess the ability to translate medical terminology and abbreviation into full forms. Medical transcriptionists do take the help of electronic and printed reference materials. They must adhere to specific standards relevant to the style of medical records. Concomitant to that, they should conform to the legal and ethical requirements that come with the territory.

Experienced transcriptionists recognize irregularities or errors in a medical report, and quickly verify the information. Their knack in understanding and properly transcribing patient treatments and assessments reduces the possibility of unsuccessful or even damaging treatments for patients.

Today, most health care providers send out dictation to transcriptionists with the help of either analog or digital equipment. The Internet is one forum for transmitting documentation. Another popular forum utilizes speech recognition technology; in other words, technology that electronically translates sound into written text.

The reports are subsequently formatted and corrected for translation mistakes, irregularities, grammatical and medical errors. Medical transcriptionists who work in areas using standardized jargon, like pathology or radiology, are likely to use speech recognition technology. It is widely believed that this technology will soon become common.

With the growing awareness of the benefits of medical treatment among the lay public, healthcare professionals are constantly looking for people to look after the documentation work. The wave of modern technology and medical transcriptionists should ensure that these requirements are properly met.
